Giant fish in the Amazon
Cow shark usually lives in freshwater areas and are found in the deep waters of the Amazon River tributaries like Iquitos in Peru, a seaport 4.000km. These fish can feel the changes the salinity of the surrounding water, and can be adapted according to the new environment. This fish has a length of about 3.3 meters, weighs 312kg. Like other sharks, we have countless triangular sharp teeth and strong jaws with a bite force of up to 589kg. Cow shark is considered one of the most dangerous sharks in the world.
Francisco de Orellana Amazon River was discovered in 1542, it was originally named the Riomar. Amazon river of the world’s longest line is located in the South American region has been identified 11 million years old. It is shaped like the current from 2.4 million years ago. This is the research results of scientists at the University of Liverpool UK, Netherlands Amsterdam University and the national oil company Petrobras Brazil. They made this conclusion by studying the sediment samples taken from two boreholes in the Amazon estuary.
Before this study, the exact age of the Amazon river is still a mystery. Researchers who can not penetrate the Amazon Fan – a thick sediment column up to 10 km – in the river. The company Petrobras has drilled two holes decision in the Amazon estuary – a 4.5 km deep below sea level – to remove sediment in service research.
“River sediments provide data on climate and geography of the area in ancient times”, Jorge Figueiredo – Research in the Department of Earth and Ocean University of Liverpool – said. “This study has important implications in providing for our understanding of South American geography as well as the evolution of marine life in the Amazon and the Atlantic coast.”
However, Amazon, despite being considered the world’s longest, still quite “young” compared to many other rivers in the world. “New River in North America and the Nile in Africa is thought to have hundreds of millions of years old,” Carina Hoorn, the University of Amsterdam, said.
